LMIA, “Technical immigration”
LMIA stands for Labor Market Impact Assessment. It is one of the most popular means for immigration to Canada, with its short processing duration well known among applicants.
LMIA supports Canada's closed work permit. It facilitates addition of bonus points on Express Entry through the Federal Skilled Worker program, or the Federal Student Work Experience program. It has thus drawn the attention of numerous Canadian employers, potential overseas workers, work permit holders, and potential immigrants.
Employers in Canada who need to recruit temporary foreign workers must first submit an LMIA application to the Employment and Development Canada. Upon approval, they may apply for work visas for the temporary workers to travel to Canada to work. The approval not only adds Canadian work experience to the applicant, but also means obtaining an Express Entry. The Canadian government stipulates that employers may hire foreign workers only when the domestic job market is unable to meet the needs of their companies. Therefore, when applying for LMIA, Canadian employers need to provide relevant evidence to prove previous attempts to seek eligible Canadian citizens or permanent residents before deciding there is a shortage of suitable candidates and there is a need to hire someone from other countries.
